Most deodorants come in a plastic container and might contain ingredients that are not good for you or our environment. Making your own deo is fast and easy and you might have some of the ingredients already in your kitchen. I have made two versions so far: with and without bees wax. The main “anti-smell” ingredient in these deos is baking soda, the coconut oil is antibacterial. With the rest of the ingredients I would encourage you to play around and try out.
- 20 g (a heaping Tbsp) coconut oil
- 6 g (1 Tbsp) cornstarch
- 5 g (1 tsp) baking soda
- 10 drops essential oil, I used orange and lavender
- optional: 4-6 g (2 tsp) bees wax pellets
You could also use tea tree oil, it has an antibacterial, fungistatic and virustatic effect. Vitamin E would help your mixture last longer (although I never had problems with this). The bees wax makes the mixture firmer. I also like the protected feeling on my skin in products with bees wax and the smell of it. If you don’t want it firm, the yellow color (in your clothes) or you just don’t have any wax at home just use a little more starch instead.
Melt the coconut oil and bees wax in a water bath (in a container over hot water). Mix dry ingredients in a small bowl. Pour the melted oil mixture over dry ingredients, stir until combined and add essential oil to your liking. Stir some more and let cool. That’s it. To use it, put a tiny amount on your finger and spread in your armpits. Works best if your skin is a little moist.
